Road or Nearest Main Road

Both are on the west side of Green River Cove Road after it turns sharply left (when heading north).  One is in northwest fork made by the Green River alongside the road.  The second is between the next two forks on the west side of the road.  From the USGS-GNIS system map compared to MapQuest.

This cemetery can be reached from Rutherfordton, NC by going west on highway NC108 and when you get to the Polk County line take the second road to the right that you come to. There are signs at the intersection pointing the way to Big Level and Cooper’s Gap churches. Big Level will be about five miles on the right side of the road. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This cemetery is located in the community of Mill Springs, NC. Mill Springs is where Highway NC9 and Highway NC108 intersect. There is a short road that goes from the east section NC108 around behind the old school and Post Office to the north section of NC9. The cemetery is located on this short road. (per W.D. I don’t know the name of this cemetery but I am calling it the Abrams Cemetery because that is the oldest marked burial. This cemetery is located on the south side of Landrum Road about 600 feet west of the intersection with NC 9. This is in the Sandy Plains Community. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery from Rutherford County, NC go west on Poor’s Ford Road all the way into Polk County and when you get to the sharp left bend in the road, where you turn to the right to go to Green River Baptist Church, there is a dirt road that kind of goes straight ahead at the sharp bend. Take the dirt road for not more than a mile or so and another dirt road will go off to the right, don’t turn. The cemetery is straight ahead about 200 feet on the left in the pine woods.   (per W.D. This cemetery is located on a little west of Highway NC9 in the Sunnyview community of Polk County, NC. To get there from Rutherfordton, NC you will go west on NC 108 until you cross the Green River bridge. After the bridge take the first paved road to the right, Big Level Ch. Road. There is a sign for both Big Level and Cooper’s Gap church where you make the right turn. You will go a little over seven miles and come to a stop sign, Highway NC 9, turn right for about 200 feet then turn left. The cemetery will be a little ways on your right. It is in two parts, the part away from the church and the part at the church. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery from Highway US 64-74A between Rutherfordton and Lake Lure, NC turn left, south, on to Rock Springs Road and follow on pas Rock Springs Church until you find a road to the right called Egerton Road. The cemetery will be a short distance on the right in an iron fence. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

From Saluda, NC take Highway US-176 toward Tryon, NC and just when you get to the bottom of the valley and can see the creek and railroad track off to the south take the first road south. I believe there is a sign about “Pearson Falls” at the road. Cross the river and railroad track and then turn left on the first road. This is Fork Creek Road. Just follow it and the cemetery will be on the left. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery Highway I-26 take the Saluda, NC exit and go toward Saluda to the first road to the left. This will only be a few hundred feet. The road is Old Howard Gap Road go to the first hard turn to the right with a road turning left in the turn and turn left. This is just few hundred feet down the hill. After you make the left turn just follow the road and it goes to the church/cemetery. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

The best way to find this cemetery is to go south of Rutherfordton, NC and turn toward the Cleghorn Country Club and just stay on that road until you are in Polk County and follow the signs to Green Creek Baptist. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)  Believe this is Coxe Road/Rt. 1005

To get to this cemetery from Highway US-74 take Exit 173 and go south to the stop sign. There make a right turn and follow this road a mile or so into Polk County and at the first crossroads turn left. This will be Coxe Road. The cemetery will be a couple miles on the left. (per W.D. This cemetery is located on a hill on the east side of the road, SR 1005/Coxe Road, by the Green River Plantation.

The best way for me to get to this cemetery is to get on Poor’s Ford Road in front of Adaville Baptist Church on Oakland Road south of Spindale, NC and just stay on that road until two or three miles inside Polk County and find the sign for Green River Baptist and turn right (onto Kim Miller Road?). From Sandy Plains Community on Highway NC 9, take the road west from the flashing light. The road is called Landrum Road. Follow this road a couple of miles and find a sign pointing the way to the church/cemetery. When you make the turn to the south the cemetery will be a quarter of mile on the right.   (per W.D. To get to this cemetery from Mill Spring, NC, the intersection of Highways NC-9 and NC-108, go west on NC-108 and find Houston Rd. angling off to the north side of the road. A little ways out the Houston Rd. you will find the entrance to a Duke Power Work Center or Storage Facility on you left. About one hundred yards or less there is a concrete drive bearing off extremely hard to the left. At the driveways end is the cemetery. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

Deep Gap Road

If you go south on NC 9 from Lake Lure, NC when you cross into Polk County you will need to turn to the west at the first paved road that you come to which will be Owl Hollow Road. Go one mile and you should be just past a mobile home on your left. Stop as you just start to go downhill and look to the right. You should see an old junked washing machine down in the woods. From the road walk right by the washing machine and a hundred or so yards on over on the next little ridge. The cemetery is on this little ridge as it starts to go down hill to the west. (per W.D. To get to this cemetery take NC108 out of Rutherfordton, NC until you come to the first paved road to the right after going into Polk County.  The cemetery is about two miles on the right. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This cemetery does not have any readable markers in it. It has one large hand-hewn stone standing and one laying flat and there is at least one grave marked with fieldstones. To locate this cemetery from Rutherfordton, NC take Highway US-221 south to the traffic light that is about one mile south of town and turn right onto Coxe Rd. Follow Coxe Rd. until it runs into Polk County and the name will change to Sandy Plains Rd. After entering Polk County go to the second intersection which is a full cross-roads and turn left onto Coxe Rd.  Follow Coxe Rd. to the first road to the right, just before a bridge, go a couple hundred feet out this gravel road and find a driveway angling back to the right and a sign that says Little Dog Farm. The cemetery is in the clump of trees on top of the little round hill. I could not find anyone that could tell me anything about the cemetery hence it is called “Little Dog Cemetery”.  (per W.D. To get to this cemetery from Rutherfordton, NC take highway NC108 toward Tryon, NC. After you cross the county line into Polk County take the first paved road to the left. It will be the left just before the road to Pea Ridge Baptist Church (old #19 Pea Ridge Road). Manus Chapel is an old and nearly abandoned wood frame church about half a mile out this road on the left.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

On Highway NC 9, go to the Green Creek Community and find a road off to the east called Chesnee Rd. Go about two miles and find a road to the right called Melvin Hill Ch. Rd. Cemetery will be about a half mile on the left.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This one is located just a hundred or so feet west of the intersection of Highways NC 9 and NC 108 in Mill Spring, NC. You just can’t miss this one.    (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery from US 221 south of Rutherfordton, NC take SR 1005 southwest and go by the Cleghorn Country Club and on by the Green River Plantation. This cemetery can be reached from Highway US-74, in Polk County, NC, by taking the Pea Ridge Rd. exit and going south. Just a couple hundred feet after you cross back over US-74 there will be a road going almost parallel with US-74, John Shehan Rd., follow it till you find a road going south called Moore Rd. The cemetery is a few hundred on the left. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This cemetery can be reached from Highway NC-108 by turning south on the first paved road west of the Rutherford County line. It is called Old #19 Pea Ridge Rd. follow this road to the road that turns right just past Manus Methodist Ch. The cemetery/church will be at the end of the road.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

From I-26 take the Landrum, SC exit and go west toward Landrum. Just as you approach the Landrum city limits sign there will be a street off to the north and there is a sign pointing the way to Morgans Chapel Baptist. It is about 2.8 miles. Just follow the signs. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

From Lake Lure, NC take NC9 south a couple of miles to the community of Sunnyside and turn right and go on by Coopers Gap Baptist church. It will be probably three miles past Coopers Gap to Mountain View Baptist. It is on the east side of the road.   (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This cemetery is located in southeast Polk County, NC on the Mill’s Springs- Chesnee Road. It is 1-2 miles north of the SC state line. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To find this cemetery go east from the NC 9 and NC 108 intersection. You go east just a few hundred feet and you will find a paved road off the right side of the road. Follow it until it splits and one goes to the right and one to the left. Take the right fork and it will take you to Thompson’s rock quarry. The cemetery is on the back side of the quarry in a chain link fence. It is grown up in trees and some underbrush. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

Pacolet Hills Baptist Church, located about 1/4 mile off of Landrum Road on Red Fox Road. From I-26, go North into N.C. on Landrum Road, turn Left at the first intersection [Red Fox Rd.], the church is on the left. >From Columbus, take Peniel Road, turn right onto Red Fox Road, continue on this road until you pass Red Fox Golf Course, the church will be on the right.  (per W.D. This cemetery is west on Highway NC 9 south of Mill Springs, NC. There is a really nice sign at the road where it pulls off from NC 9. It will be a couple of miles out this road.   (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This cemetery can be reached from Landrum, SC by going east on the main street through the town of Landrum. This road runs kind of northeast into Polk and then Rutherford counties in NC. Travel this road until it crosses in to NC and then take the next main road to the left. This road goes by the Red Fox Country Club. Follow this road about two a couple of miles or so until you find a sign on the left side of the road beside a driveway that says Old Prince Cemetery.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

On Highway NC 108 just a couple hundred feet west of Highway US 74 you will find a road to the left, south, called Fox Mtn. Rd., follow this road just a couple tenths of a mile and find a paved driveway to the right and a sign saying Ridings Cemetery. The cemetery is at the end of the driveway.    (per W.D. To get to this cemetery take US74 and go to the first exit past the Rutherfordton/US221 exit and turn south. Go about 4-5 miles and the cemetery is on the left side of the road.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery from Mill Spring, NC which is located at the intersection of Highways NC 9 and NC 108. Go north on NC 9 for just a few hundred feet and turn west at the first road. The cemetery will be on the left at about three miles. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

On Highway NC-108 from Rutherfordton, NC to Tryon, NC go west past the intersection of NC-108 and NC-9, which is at Mill Spring, NC, to the first left which is about a quarter mile. This will be Fox Mtn. Rd./Bill Collins Road.  Go to first right which will be Stony Knoll Road.  Cemetery will be on the left out this road.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery from Tryon, NC  take East Howard St. which leaves US-176 at the traffic light at the City Hall. Follow E. Howard St. and find Grady Avenue going off to the left. Follow Grady Ave. and find Markham Road bearing off to the right. Follow Markham Road and the cemetery will be on your left.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

To get to this cemetery go south on NC 9 from the intersection with NC 108 at Mills Springs, NC. You probably go about five miles south on 9 until you come to an intersection with the road that goes west called Landrum Road and the one to the east is Sandy Plains Road. Turn west on Landrum Road and go about three miles and find a white gravel drive on the north side of the road. The cemetery is about a thousand feet out this driveway.  (per W.D. This cemetery is in the extreme southern portion of Polk County just a couple of miles out of SC. For me to get to the cemetery, I take Poor’s Ford Road which can be found as the road that crosses US 221 about three or four miles south of Rutherfordton, NC. Once you are on Poor’s Ford Road west of US 221 just stay on it until you come to a stop sign which is several miles. At the stop sign turn to the south, left, and go about two miles and see a sign for the church on the right side of the road at an intersection. Turn right at the intersection and the cemetery will be on the right, north, side of the road on both sides of the church.  (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

This cemetery is located in the southeast corner of Polk County, NC. From the NC/SC state line going northwest on the Chesnee-Mill Spring Road (the part in Rutherford County is called Lamb’s Grill Road) go 2.8 miles and find a road off to the south called Radar Road. Follow this road and it will turn into a gravel road, just keep following it and it will make a hard right turn. At the turn follow the driveway straight ahead. You can see the cemetery on the right. You will need to get permission to go to this cemetery since it is on private property. Do this without fail. (per W.D. Floyd's directions)

"This cemetery is located on Pea Ridge Road south from exit 170 on Highway US-74 west of Rutherfordton, NC. I started the survey in the northwest corner on March 9, 2000 and was almost through when I was approached by a female member of the church. She asked and I explained what I was doing. It was suggested that I should get permission to do such and I said that it was not a problem for me to just leave. She allowed that would be fine. This is the first time, after doing hundreds of surveys, that I have been more or less asked to leave. I make the surveys available to everyone by placing them on the Internet. I only spend my time and my money doing this and really enjoy the help that it gives others. It seems that with anything, the few tend to make it miserable for the many. So in closing this survey, to the African-Americans of Polk County, NC, I will say, if you would like to have your cemetery surveyed and added to the rest, it will be up to someone to contact me and ask me to do the survey and then I will consider it." --W. To get to this cemetery go to the Main Street of Columbus, N.C. which is highway 108. Near the Courthouse will be Columbus Baptist Church. Take the road that goes in front of the church (Houston Road). The road will branch off in about 1/2 mile, take the left fork which will be Skyuka Rd. the cemetery will be on the right just past the bridge that goes over I-26.
